Default Developing Abs from Tensing?

I've always wondered about this and I believe I've heard a couple people mention it before and read about it once or twice: does tensing your abs help to develop them?

Basically by tensing and holding for a few seconds, releasing, and repeating. It seems too simple and easy to be true (do it anywhere, while you walk through the mall, etc.). Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks.

I doubt this works. I mean at the boxing gym we tense our abs and then hit them to make them able to absorb impact and thus make them hard but I'm not sure.
