Default Russian Speed Training

Hey guys,

Just thought I'd let you guys know a little training technique that was taught to me by my trainer. This was one of the first things he went over with me while in the gym during our first week. I've been doing it ever since.

You can try this with any punch, but I've been working exclusively with jabs. Take a set number of reps (I do 10), no gloves, no hand wear. Start doing your selected punch 10 times.

Then put in a small weight. Repeat the process. Lose the weight, then redo it, so you have a small pattern ... punches with, and 10 without the weight.

You can try any weight, but I recommend using one that is around 10-20 pounds per hand. The heavier the weight and the better you train yourself, the faster you'll notice a difference in your jabbing speed.

You can try this with any weight, and it works very well and efficient. It's definitely improved my speed.

I've done this for a while now and it does improve your overall speed, reaction time and agility. It also increases muscle mass and conditions your joints (depending on the weight increment).

I'd strongly recommend it to anyone. It works wonders for high kicks and sweeps.

I've never actually considered this, so thanks for posting I'll give it a go next time I train.

I'd strongly recommend taking it a bit at a time to avoid joint and muscle damage and also to avoid fatigue.

If you've never done this before it may take a while to become used to the regime. Always keep yourself hydrated and dont train in an environment thats too humid, warm or too cold.

I've been trying this systematically for the past 48 hours and I must say, I feel great for including this into my workout.

I've implemented this into my regime on a daily basis now doing 10 minutes each day with 1.5kg per hand. I'm seeing a fast improvement on speed and punch strength in each arm, even over a short period of time.

Ah yes, this technique. I never actually knew the name of this, but now that I do, it sort of makes sense. Why do they call it Russian?

Anyways, a lot of fighters use this technique, and it does improve your speed and power. So if you haven't started doing this yet, I'd highly recommend starting.

Yeah, adding the weight is very, very effective. I will through this into my routine. Should i add weight then take it off or keep adding and take it off at the end?

This sounds like a very good idea! Just one thing what sort of weights would you use for this? Im just thinking of how you would hold them with risking throwing them across the room
