lead with the left, strike with the right !!! i usually throw the left jab first. it doesn't have to be very hard, i just put it in there face to kind of distract them, then quickly come with the right straight or hook, depends on what looks to be more open. i also enjoy leading with a fake left low kick, then coming right in on him with a straight or overhand right.

I have to say it is completely dependent on what your trying to set up, and where your opponent stands. If you both are squared off and your not looking to set up a kick or a shot or anything than it doesn't matter at all. Straight right, straight left, right hook, doesn't matter really, just don't lift your head up and expose your chin and your okay. If your countering a punch then it's all circumstantial. My favorite punch is left hook right kick right hook left kick. Or left jab, right straight, leg kick.

BTW Grawl wins for best technique for fake low left kick and coming in with overhand right; Randy used that!!

Now this is why I love MMA. 10 different people, and 10 slightly different ways to do 1 thing.

Lol very true.. Comming for a Kickboxing/Thai background my punches are usually to set up kicks. So like mentioned I like a left, right, right kick. Also I like to lead with a left hook, then right kick.

What do you guys prefer to do first and why?
Agreed the first one rocks them and the second one drops them.

i like to lead with a non dominant jab. thats just the way i was taught, the jab is more to feel out your opponents reaction time and speed as well as distance. sometimes throw it just to get a feel, not even intending to connect.

with the throwing with the dominant hand, its like a trade off. the harder you punch, the more likely you will get countered harder. a jab has little counter risk but little ko effectiveness where as a haymaker has much greater counter risk but more ko power. people just have to figure out what their most comfortable with and what will work best on their current opponent

Without taking kicks into account and just using hands. I have two I like to use a lot.

First I like to throw back to back non-dominant hand jabs and follow with a hook/upper. I throw two because 9 time out of 10 the first will get slipped or blocked and the second has a better chance to land clean and at least shake them and set up the dominant punch.

The other I like is dominant straight followed by a non-dominant hook and either a dominant elbow or I like to clinch.

So I like to use both depending on the other guy. I didn't say left or right because I stand southpaw and didn't want people thinking I meant to throw with the dominant hand when I said right.

But all great combos have kicks, so this isn't really fair.
