Default Judo

I was wondering if there are any Judo practitioner's or fan's here?

I myself have never trained it before, but I did consider doing so for some time. I have always been a big fan of the art of Judo and love the throw's especially. Watching someone who know's what they are doing is simply amazing.

It is one of the reason's that Karo Parisyan is my favorite welterweight of all time. That guy has to be the top fighter in MMA when it come's to no gi Judo.

Karo is deffinetly one of the best in MMA with no gi. I trained Judo when i was young, before i started hockey and football. That was some time ago but i still remember the basics. I never learned anything really cool in the short time i did Judo but Judo has some deadly throws.

Judo was actually one of the first martial arts. Originated in Japan, it is the martial art that Jui Jitsu is derived from. Japanese style Jui Jitsu is alot more Judo esque . In fact when the Gracies first learned Jui Jitsu it was Japanese Jui Jitsu that they had gotten taught by a japanese sensai whhen the Gracie family first migrated from Ireland to Brazil. This of course was a long time ago. Most of the Gracies were fairly big guys and had the strength to do the Judo style throws that Japanese Jui Jitsu had to offer.

Sooner or later they open their own Dojo. I not sure the names of each Gracie but it was Helio (Royce's Father) and his 2 brothers who ran the dojo. However Helio was sickly and week and couldnt do any of the throws because ofthis and was forced to watch every lesson and not partake. One day one brother was sick while the other injured so Helio was forced to instruct the class. Helio, who like i said before was quite week and sickly, had fifgured out a way for a 130lb guy, which he was, to take down a much larger opponent with ease and get him in a submission. THe other brothers saw this and were impressed by it and eventually changed the Japanese style Jui Jitsu they had gotten taught into there own form of Jui Jitsu which they called Gracie Jui Jitsu, which later became Brazilian Jui Jitsu.

So if it werent for Judo we might not even have MMA today. Pretty crazy.

So true sir, so true. It is definitely something to think about.

Of course there were Pancrase events In Greece though, so that may have been the lead into MMA instead. Who knows?

But it was the Gracies who first started the UFC if im not mistaken. So you could say if the Gracies had never learned jui jitsu then there could very well be no UFC.

I find that Pride has more Judo style fighters than the UFC does.

Definitely. With it being there national sport (if I remember correctly), it's not surprising. They even teach it in schools there, like the way they used to have P.E. here in the states.

I cant believe they ot rid of PE in the states. Canada is not alot better though, they should make people to PE in shcool. After all obessity, other than smoking, is the most preventable cause of death in the USA.

I got to do wrestling in High School and that was kind of fun but Jui Jitsu or catch wrestling would have been cooler, even Judo.

I know what you mean. I always thought they should bring in a Martial Arts instructor to schools to teach the kid's not only fitness and the art itself, but also discipline. We would have alot less bs going on in our scools if they did.

Then again some little brat would probably ruin it for every one by using a move to injure another kid badly. Then come the lawsuit's.

Yep Judo rules...

Weird how this thread came up again.LoL...

Anyways, yea, Gracie's started UFC, but it's interesting how like PFC, there was a heavy element of jobing fights - trying to keep specific outcomes happening and rigging fights. When I was talking to Dan Severn he said he was approached a few times to get tapped...then again this was back in the first 5 or so UFC's, Gracie's sold around UFC 10 if I'm not mistaken?

But then again who knows...
