Default Tae Kwon Do

There are two types of TKD:

ITF and WTF. From what I understand and admire (being tall) is that TKD utilises more kicks and strikes using the legs than it does punch and upper body strikes. It requires flexibility and muscular strength.

Does anyone study or know more? I'm eager to learn.

I have never taken TKD but I have watched a lot. They do fight mostly with there feet. The good TKD people that I have seen are able to pull off some really nice looking kicks (the pretty stuff.) However I always see them with there guard down. Which I don't really know why?? Anyone know?

I used to watch a lot of TKD, but like TsuaSai I haven't ever studied it (yet).

I loved watching the TKD Forms. Several high speed perfectly executed high kicks all done without dropping the knee or putting the foot to the ground. Very impressive, definitley one of the more eclectic art forms IMO.

I studied it for a short time - I found it to be a very pretty martial art, not as effective defensively as Karate though. Although I was only studying for 2-3 months so maybe that was to come afterwards.

I've seen ITF, but im not sure that i've ever viewed WTF before. Is there any websites with a few videos that i could watch? Im semi-interested in TKD, so this would help decide whether i pursue it or not.

Tae Kwon Do is an excellent martial art to study if you are looking for a martial art that will give you a means of self defence although its not ideal for close-quarter bar or alley-way brawls -also dont expect it to hold up too well against fighters at a similar level to you in many other martial arts.

I mentioned in another thread that I tried out TKD but my teacher didn't speak the best English and that really messed up my chances of enjoying the teaching.

My little brother just got his red belt the other day, and our schools base is TKD the lead instructors got 3rd degree black belt and other two instructors have 2nd degrees. I stopped once I got to around green belt but it does amazing work for your kicking height and accuracy.

I have to partially agree.

Sad, though, most TKD out there don't train like they had in the 60's.

They had a excellant self defense curriculum and usually a TKD instructor was versed in Yudo/Hapkido
