Everyone seems to respond well to the cultural approach.

This is exactly how I was taught shotokan Karate, this was in fact the martial art I enjoyed the most.
I think its so popular due to the fact it is the most easily recognisable art to the regular joe on the street. The movies in the late 80's early 90's such as Karate Kid makes most people associate martial arts with karate and thus if anyone wants to start some form of martial arts/self defence then karate is the first thing that springs to mind.
And in response to the person claiming Karate isnt that effective on the streets in real fights then all can say is someone who knows karate (and practices it properly) V someone who doesnt know any martial art will always fare better. I was unfortunate enough to be in a position back at school to have to rely on my Karate for self defence and without it I dont know what would have happened to me.
