Default When is the right time?

What do you guys think is the right time to lunge in for a tackle or a submission? I am in no means a submission fighter, but there have been times when I think the timing is right, but I get nailed anyways.

Any suggestions on what to look for?

Look for your opponent to be off balance. Usually a counter-tackle or something is great. Look for him to put all his weight into a punch and then go for it.

Since you say you always get nailed when going in, and you aren't a submission fighter, it may be because you make it too obvious. Try to disguise your lunges and what not.

This may sound cliche, but you'll know what to do when the time is right. A lot of times, many fighters, including me, don't have time to think in the ring. It's a lot based off of instinct.

If you think you can take him down, do it. Otherwise, stay away. Guard, then counter. If you aren't good at submissions, don't try it. Chances are he may be more advanced then you, and getting down on the ground with him may backfire on you.

That's a really good point. Bishop, if you don't know how to fight on the ground, I suggest you not to do it. Like Rogue pointed out, it can do more harm then good in the end.

Like rouge said, it's instinct.

The more fights you have, the more of a "feel" you'll get for when the time is right.

I think you need to check for inconsistencies. Try to study your opponent, and when you feel that he's left himself vulnerable, go for it. It's next to impossible to pull off a successful tackle when your opponent is paying attention.

You should definitely go when hes in mid swing/kick. You may take a punch or two, but if you know what you're doing, you should definitely be able to get him onto the ground.

I'd like to think that right after an opponent kicks would be the best time to do it. He's vulnerable, off balance, and a hard kick will take a lot of energy out of him.

He'll be disoriented if you're able to tackle him into the ground, and he won't be prepared for it.

Good point Bryan, Study your opponent. It's all about timing.

Wait to he commits to a punch or a kick and then go in.

True. But a lot of "instinct" comes from training. Find the right trainer and you will feel comfortable.
