Default Good Rolling Practice?

What are some good drills for rolling and grappling? I've been told rolling with a heavy bag works. I've been rolling with a partner as of late, but our schedules conflict, so we're not always able to practice our technique.

Any good one man drills you guys know of?

I roll with a heavy bag. I unhook it from its chain and take some rolls with it. Just make sure you do it when no one's watching because you look ridiculous

Using a heavy bag also gives you the option of training with your strikes and such. So give that a try.

I'll have to pick up a heavy bag then. Do I need a fancy one? Or can I get away with a more affordable one?

Definitely use a heavy bag. That's what I use whenever I need to roll and I don't have access to a partner.

The only thing is it is very difficult to do anything outside of rolling. You can't really pin, or learn any submission holds, and you are only ... rolling, which gets repetitive after a while, and isn't exactly helpful after the first couple of times.

You don't need to buy a bag for it in my opinion. Its a waste of money since you'll only use it a couple times for rolling. If you decide to buy it, make sure you buy it for purposes other then rolling, like practicing your strikes.

I don't have any suggestions really since I have a partner that I fight with. We practice regularly, and it really does help. I'd suggest finding one at your local gym if you can't.

I know you have one now, but if your schedule conflicts, then what's the point? Try to find someone with a better schedule.

Good point Bishop. If your partner has a conflicting schedule with you Rogue, why don't you just go out and try to find another partner? It'll be better, and potentially cheaper.

I hate rolling with a bag. While it's decent practice, it annoying as hell.

Unless you have an extra bag kicking around it gftes old taking it down and putting it back.

Using a partner is so much better though.

Well, rolling with a bag is usually just for excercise and practice. It isn't necessarily something you should depend on since...like you said, it isn't realistic.

At our club for conditioning we'll do tag team grappling. You'll start from mount, and their are 6-7 guys in your group and every time you gain control you get jumped by a fresh guy each time... works wonders for grapppling conditioning.

And then another one we do is two guys lay on top from either mount or side mount and you have to get both of them off for 3 minutes... 30 second rest... 5 times.

try these... lay the bag on the floor choose one side for the head, and go into the north/south position at the head side of the bag, then move into the scarf position on either left or right then go into side mount... then go back to scarf, then north/south then repeat over to the other side. Do this about 3 sets of 10.

grab ur heavy bag and lift and stand it up.. grab the top of it and using just ur arms lift it up 10 times, keep ur elbows tucked in as it will work ur tricepts. Then take the bag by the mid-section and suplex it... stand it back up and repeat. when u lift the bag 10 times it will make sure that the contents of the bag is nicely compact at the bottom... so the bag is nice and stiff and easy to control when u perform the slam.

another one we used to practise in training is lay the bag on the floor and tie a martial arts belt around it.. about 3/4 up the bag this will represent an arm... full mount the bag and rest the belt over one of your shoulders and start dropping bombs.. then swing ur leg around for an armbar, armbaring the belt.

i hope this all makes sence lol
