Default Video Tutorials?

Has anyone ever purchased a DVD or a video that helps you train, or show you techniques? I'm considering getting a training DVD for BJJ. But BJJ seems to be complicated and complex, and seems to be something that is better learned in person, then it is by myself, or through a video.

I am considering doing this with a friend. He wants to get into it, and I want to learn more, so I guess it'd be beneficial to the both of us. That way, we have eachother to practice on, but he's inexperienced and I'm afraid he'll do something wrong and snap my arm...

Has anyone ever bought a DVD? I just want to know if its worth the $50.00 or so that a bulk of the videos charge, and whether or not its' actually helped you...

Any recommendations also?

IMO most of the videos out there are a waste of money. Most people buy them and they just sit on a shelf. However since you have someone that you would be training with I could workout better for you.

$50 seems high I don't know what classes cost in your area. But seems like you could get more out of a good class and it would cost maybe the some or a little more.

I've seen DVDs selling for around $30 - $50.00. You should check out eBay or something and see what sort of things turns up for you.

In all honesty, I don't believe in DVD training videos, with or without a partner. It's very difficult to follow, and it isn't hands on. You can't control the camera, so you don't know exactly which position to look at, and if you want to examine something else in the stance you can't because you are restricted to the camera.

I'd say you and your friend are better off splitting classes and the cost. Perhaps your local school/trainer will be willing to give a discount if both of you sign up at the same time.

An idea to save on cost would be to try to win a video. I have won two training videos off of black n blue videos. They are pretty good and the cost was the perfect price.

Also before I did buy one for 50 bucks I would try to find a review. See what other though about it.

AS i sai din another post. I don't recommend using Videos to Learn the moves and techniques, but rather to reinforce them. Learning from a real, live Person is way different then learning from a video.

I have never tried to train a martial art of videos before - I have however learned how to lift properly from videos - something that requires little one to one contact like lifting works quite well but learning a martial art?!? I dont think that could work.

Yeah Sparky is right, i would think you would need hands-on teaching to get the posture and forms right, i just can't see it being done effectively through a video.

Learning from a video is certainly better than learning from a book but even so it doesnt even compare to learning in person. The one to one tuition you recieve while learning these techniques is vital if you want to do it right!
