I wouldnt say over or under rated as the lingo. What I would say is.. "Watered Down" The standards are falling as more schools open up to cash in on the MMA craze. Even locally several Kickboxing clubs have now brought in JJ instructors to do classes at the kickboxing schools. Your not gonna get the same quality teaching there as you would at a strictly JJ school. I have a Black Belt in 2 different arts and I too am very frustrated with the Black Belt Factory's. I like that term very much actually. When I got my black belt in Tae Kwon Do there were 2 people that were getting tested with me for thier black belts too. Both were mid 40's males. Both of them couldnt kick above thier head. They both passed. I was so choked at the school for passing them I actually quit the school shortly after. There was no honor to the abillity that should be possesed for a black belt caliber person. The fact they had trained there for a couple years and payed their membership dues basically bought them a black belt. During the combat portion of the testing I gave one of them a bloody nose and bruised the other guys ribs... I was a little pissed they were concidered in the same league as me so I let em have it.

I've already decided that in a couple years when I feel I've really peaked in my Muay Thai skills, I'm going to switch over to train BJJ full time. I have no plans to fight MMA but I'd LOVE to compeat in some grappling tournies.

Black is usually the defined "end" of the belt system... then you get into the different degrees of black.. kind of silly really.

As long as I can remember, you can esentially find any school that is easier than others, regardless of the art you are looking to partake in.

With the popularity of BJJ, I agree that BJJ is certainly being confused with JJ. Where I'm from it's hard to find an actual BB BJJ instructor, I think in Manitoba there is 4 - well definately in Winnipeg there is 4. I am learning from a Purple belt, but am also doing Sambo and Judo, where he is a BB in both.

BJJ is definately not over rated, when you slap a key lock on someone, or a triangle - it rules. Better then that, the guy you're doing it to doesn't think it's overrated...I could not imagine a fighter not having BJJ experience in MMA, they might as well be Tank Abbott and 50...

i dont know if jj could be getting confused with bjj.. since this big mainstream mma craze broke out i think people are talking about bjj being much different than original japanese jui-jitsu. first off bjj uses the gi, and japanese uses judoka. similair yet still not the same which makes a big difference. i have started training with a 3rd degree BB from royler gracies team, who is also a BB in judo. he's definetely teaching me how traditional bjj is taught i can say from reading what japanese jui-jitsu is there are many things similair yet very different... also in bjj the highest belt achievable is black, yet the highest belt period is a solid red belt. which only carlos and helio and their brothers can have. crazy stuff lol

bjj is definitely not overrated and that if you want to be succesful in mma you need to know jiu jitsu or a art similar to it, it is highly effective and practical

I think that bjj is overrated. Its an effective grappling system but so many people thinks its the end all be all of grappling when there are many different grappling systems. Silat, judo, sambo. The problem is that most bjj instructors have adapted the system for mma(sport) while the other arts focous on self defence.
