Personally, I don't train in BJJ with a gi since both in a street fight and in a MMA fight you don't have a gi (unles you are Royce or Yoshida). That is why I study submission grappling without a gi.
I agree that BJJ will always have a place in fighting no matter how far we advance in MMA. It is a great art for submissions, sub defense and for teaching disipline. As far as a grappling base, I would say that wrestling is better for that IMO but you definitely need submission training in MMA.
The one thing I have noticed happening is that there are too many black belt factories popping up as the sport of MMA gets more and more popular. For example I have a friend that got his brown belt (one belt away from back belt) in less than a year. That is laughable since in any real Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school you could take many years to achieve such a rank.
Also, it is a JJ school he got his brown belt in, which too many people confuse for BJJ. I have never trained in any formal school and yet I find myself teaching him stuff all the time. It is quite funny.
In other words, beware of the black belt factory.

I'll agree with Termifedor...it's the black belt factory that's really bringing down the sport and the teaching. Becuase of it, it's starting to make all of the "real arts" really lose face and value IMO.

No doubt. Too many people these days are joining JJ schools and getting black belts like Christmas gifts and think they actually know something about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Then they go out to a bar and pick a fight with someone and get their asses handed to them. It's so sad.

Some of us (The MMA Guys) did think BJJ was over rated, until we had a Gracie BB come train with us. After that we changed our views completly. It's very impressive when you go up against a true BJJ fighter and you dont even have a chance. Sad but true.

BJJ overated????......Not a chance. The cost of maybe learning the art is a bit extreme. But the practicality is awesome. The majority of the techniques are complex, but in order for you to be effective at the art, do you have to know complex moves?....I dont think so, personally.

I completely disagree. Karate, if you ask me, is more for showmanship than it is for fighting. All those kata's and crap that they have to learn serve no purpose in real combat or MMA. BJJ is a necessity if you want to be a well rounded fighter and it always will be.

BJJ is deffinetly not over rated. Over used perhaps, but not overrated. By this i mean, if you have an extremely talented BJJ artist, they makee BJJ look so fluid and simple it real is amazing. Then you get someone who isnt as skilled at BJJ but still tries using it in a fight but just make it look bad and can never stick submissions.
Jiu Jitsu, whether it be Brazilian or Japanese is by no means overrated and a good Jiu Jitsu fighter is never to be underestimated.

The reason? It takes a lot of patience, practice, and knowledge to excel at BJJ, and you won't be able to teach BJJ to the mainstream "wannabe" fighters. It's simply to complex.

I think it could get as mainstream as karate maybe not along the same lines as Grandmaster Helio Gracie training some skinny white kid in "the juijitsu kid" but you're right about it being popular for a reason. Juijitsu is a martial art that truly anyone can participate in which attracts more and more people to participate. Its a sport that is also very mental and requires stratedgy, and I can participate in juijitsu knowing I don't have as large of a chance as getting stitches in my head after matches like muay thai and regular kickboxing.
