Hey rogue,

When comparing most weight machines versus free weights, I would generally say that free weights are the best route to take if you can have an assistant work out with you. If you can not get someone else to work out and be a "spotter", you definitely need a machine for safety reasons.

Unlike traditional weight machines (the ones that use weight plates), the Bowflex uses power rods. Power rods do not reduce the amount of stabilizing you need to do when working out - so in essence, the Bowflex (using Power rods) mimics free weights. However, unlike free weights, the Bowflex is safe and requires no assistant to "spot" you while working out. Any life-threatening mistake you make will damage the machine, not you.

In the end, I suggest buying a Bowflex home gym if you can find the extra money. Otherwise, find a buddy to work out with you and use free weights.
